Opportunity
HFN Forestry LP is seeking Expressions of Interest from qualified contractors with experience in longline, skyline, cable yarding, and steep-slope harvesting systems.
HFN Forestry LP is actively evaluating the development of a long-term cable harvesting program within its operating areas on Vancouver Island and is interested in identifying experienced contractors capable of supporting the planning, development, and execution of a sustainable longline harvesting program.
This EOI is intended to identify capable contractors, understand available harvesting capacity and equipment, and gather operational and commercial information that will assist HFN Forestry LP in developing future harvesting opportunities.
This Expression of Interest is not a Request for Proposal, Request for Tender, or commitment to award work.
About HFN Forestry LP
HFN Forestry LP manages forestry operations on behalf of the Huu-ay-aht First Nations within the Barkley Sound region of Vancouver Island.
HFN Forestry LP is committed to sustainable forest management, responsible resource development, improved fibre utilization, and the creation of long-term economic opportunities within the region.
As part of its long-term harvesting strategy, HFN Forestry LP is evaluating opportunities to increase the use of cable harvesting systems where operationally and economically appropriate.
Preliminary Program Overview
HFN Forestry LP is currently developing a harvesting strategy that may include a combination of:
  • Longline cable yarding systems
  • Running skyline systems
  • Standing skyline systems
  • Swing yarder operations
  • Conventional cable harvesting systems
  • Select helicopter harvesting applications
Current planning activities include the identification and layout of harvest areas suitable for longline and skyline harvesting configurations, with additional helicopter opportunities also being assessed.
Anticipated Harvest Program
While no guarantees are provided, HFN Forestry LP is currently evaluating a program with the following preliminary targets:
  • Proposed commencement: Q2 2027
  • Anticipated annual harvest volume: approximately 25,000–35,000 m³
  • Multi-year program potential
  • Opportunities for future expansion as additional harvest areas are developed
Respondents should identify their ability to support both the initial program and future growth opportunities.

HFN Forestry LP is not requesting binding pricing through this process; however, respondents are encouraged to provide:

  • Indicative machine rates
  • Mobilization and setup requirements
  • Minimum volume requirements
  • Operational assumptions used in developing rates
Comparable Project Experience
Please provide details for a minimum of three (3) comparable harvesting projects completed within the past five years.
For each project, include:
  • Client name
  • Location
  • Year completed
  • Harvesting system utilized
  • Total volume harvested (m³)
  • Average piece size (m³)
  • Average yarding distance (m)
  • Yarder and carriage configuration
  • Average productivity (m³/PMH)
  • Average daily production (m³/day)
  • Client reference
This information will help HFN Forestry LP assess expected productivity under operating conditions like those on Huu-ay-aht First Nations lands.
Program Development
HFN Forestry LP is particularly interested in engaging contractors capable of contributing to the development of a long-term cable harvesting program.
Respondents are encouraged to provide recommendations regarding:
  • Optimal harvesting system configurations
  • Production and efficiency opportunities

  • Workforce considerations
  • Long-term partnership opportunities

Submissions should contain sufficient information to demonstrate experience, operational capability, production capacity, and interest in participating in future opportunities with HFN Forestry LP.
