TLA welcomes historic federal investment in Canada’s forest sector

The Truck Loggers Association (TLA) welcomes the federal government’s significant commitment to Canada’s forest sector in Budget 2026, recognizing the industry’s vital contribution to Canada’s economy, rural communities and long-term economic prosperity.

The $6.5-billion Forest Sector Transformation Strategy, building on $2.9 billion in previously announced support, represents an historic investment in an industry that employs nearly 200,000 Canadians, contributes billions to Canada’s GDP and supports hundreds of rural, remote and Indigenous communities across the country.

At a time when Canada’s forest sector is facing unprecedented challenges from unjustified U.S. tariffs, shifting global markets and increasing competitive pressures, this investment sends an important signal that the federal government recognizes the strategic importance of the industry and the need to support its long-term competitiveness.

“Canada’s forest sector is an essential part of our economic foundation, and the challenges facing our industry demand a strong and coordinated response,” said Peter Lister, Executive Director of the Truck Loggers Association. “This historic commitment recognizes the importance of the sector to Canada’s economy and the communities that depend on it. Investments in forest management, fibre supply, facility modernization and innovation are critical to strengthening our industry, protecting jobs and ensuring Canadian forest products remain competitive in global markets.”

The TLA also recognizes the importance of the government’s focus on economic diversification, infrastructure investment and strengthening domestic industries as Canada works to reduce its dependence on the U.S. market and build greater economic resilience.

“This is an important step forward for Canada’s forest sector and a recognition of the significant role our industry plays in building a stronger, more resilient Canadian economy,” said Bob Marquis, President of the Truck Loggers Association. “We appreciate the federal government’s commitment at a time when the industry needs support and a clear path forward. Now, we must turn these commitments into meaningful action that strengthens the entire forest sector, supports the businesses and workers on the ground, and ensures we can continue to contribute to Canada’s economic future.”

The TLA looks forward to working with the federal government, provincial partners, Indigenous communities and industry stakeholders to advance these investments and ensure they deliver meaningful, measurable outcomes.

A strong and competitive forest sector is essential to Canada’s economic future. With the right investments, policies and partnerships, Canada can build on its global reputation for sustainable forest management, strengthen domestic manufacturing and secure a more resilient future for the industry and the communities it supports.
