Earlier this year, British Columbia appointed a new deputy minister for the Ministry of Forests. Raised in the heart of the forestry sector, born into the family of a truck logger and growing up in a forestry camp, Makenzie Leine has been tasked with supporting a sector facing significant challenges.
“I used to go out with my dad in the morning…he`d be running his machine out on a block and I would hang out with him,” Leine recalls.

TLA Executive Director`s Message
Stakes are High
"One of BC government’s top priorities is reconciliation with First Nations peoples and the implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA), which was passed in 2019, making BC the first jurisdiction in Canada to legally commit to aligning its laws and policies with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)."

"My last message in the Summer 2025 issue of Truck LoggerBC magazine raised a concern that is dear to me, which is recognizing the investment that the British Columbian forest industry’s supply chain makes to provide wood products manufacturers their key input—delivered logs.
Collectively, by my estimation, BC’s logging and road building contractors have nearly $3 billion invested to run their businesses today, based on replacement values of contractor’s equipment in use. This dollar amount does not include annual investment in upgrades and rotation of equipment. I raise this collective investment topic again for a good reason."

Did you know? 🌲🌲
Canada, and the province of British Columbia, were quick to adopt forest certification, from its inception nearly two decades ago.
Canada accounts for almost 36 percent of all certified forests globally—the largest of any country worldwide. More than 85 percent of British Columbia’s Crown forestland have been certified by one of three bodies.
That’s the same amount of certified forests as Norway, Germany, Brazil and Sweden combined.

If not wood, then what?
It’s an important question as we consider the future for our children and generations to come.
Is it plastic or some other non-biodegradable product – or is it wood, the only truly renewable, recyclable product.
Sustainably sourced - wood products and wood buildings continue to store carbon, providing a climate change solution at home and around the world.
Let’s plan for a future where our forests are forever - while supporting strong, resilient communities.

The TLA is pleased to see the Ministry of Forests finally take action on the recent BC Timber Sales review, and we welcome the expanded mandate and resulting recommendations. We are particularly encouraged by the focus on improving access to fibre, especially through predictable and diverse supply, increased volume targets, and timely auctions of unharvested and compromised stands. We also support the ministry’s efforts to maximize marginal harvest opportunities, including enabling the sale of low-value stands and improving utilization of harvest residuals.
Equally important is the commitment to meeting timber sale expectations through greater collaboration with licensees, contractors, and First Nations to deliver action-ready sale packages. Simplifying policy, procedures, and contract language will also go a long way toward improving efficiency across the sector.
These are all critical steps toward strengthening community resilience, reducing wildfire risk, and creating sustainable economic opportunities for workers, communities, and our partners in First Nations and community forests.
Following two key articles in the TLA’s Truck LoggerBC magazine, “Is BCTS Broken?” (Fall 2023), which called for a review, and “BCTS Review: BC Government is Promising Big Changes” (Spring 2025), which highlighted many of the now-adopted recommendations, combined with its submission of recommendations, the TLA is optimistic about the direction and four cornerstones that now frame BCTS’ renewed mandate. ...

Many thanks to MP Aaron Gunn North Island–Powell River and north Island mayors for bringing awareness to BC’s forestry crisis in Victoria today. Made-in-BC and Made-in-Canada policies are affecting lower harvesting levels, delayed permitting, job loss and investor confidence. These issues are top of mind for TLA members and logging contractors across BC.

Comment: Forestry is the solution for a stronger B.C.
A commentary. Haakstad is president and CEO of the B.C. Council of Forest Industries, and Lister is the executive director of the Truck Loggers Association.
As leaders gather this week at the 2025 Union of B.C. Municipalities’ convention to chart the future of British Columbia, forestry must be central to those discussions.
Forestry touches communities of every size in every part of B.C. It is not just an industry — it is part of B.C.’s fabric.
And at a time of pressing challenges, forestry offers solutions: for rural, urban and Indigenous communities, it can and should be a unifying force.
We don’t have to choose. We can — and must — do it all. And forestry is the major project that proves it — because it can deliver right now.
B.C.’s allowable annual cut is around 60 million cubic metres. We’re harvesting barely half of that, and many mills are down to one shift. That means lost jobs, lost opportunities and declining community stability.
The good news is: forestry doesn’t need years of permitting.
And forestry is, quite simply, a solution.
• Housing: Renewable, low-carbon building materials enable everything from family homes to tall timber towers, like the new BCIT student residences.
• Wildfires: Active forest management reduces fuels that drive catastrophic fires, while industry turns that wood into renewable energy, pulp, paper, and bioproducts.
• Economic development: Billions of dollars in government revenues and tens of thousands of green jobs across operations, contractors, transportation, engineering, equipment and services in every region.
• Reconciliation: Embedding First Nations stewardship, knowledge and opportunity is critical for the future of forestry.
As global trade challenges intensify, B.C. must focus on what we can control, thereby strengthening the sector, safeguarding its workers and securing forestry’s benefits for generations.
By working together, we can ensure a stronger forestry sector, stronger communities and a stronger British Columbia.
