Sustainable Forest Management

Sustainable forest management: Management that maintains and enhances the long-term health of forest ecosystems for the benefit of all living things while providing environmental, economic, social and cultural opportunities and to present and future generations.

One key to sustainable forest management is to harvest our undercut. The chief forester has identified that the undercut is a significant problem on the coast.  Many of the stands in question are decadent stands that are net emitters of carbon.  Good forest management practices would seek to revitalize our forest growing stock regularly.

A sector in transition

The coastal forest industry in British Columbia supports over 55,000 families. B.C.’s forest products range from raw logs, timber and pulp and paper to a growing suite of bio products and other emerging high-value, forest-derived goods and services in demand by both domestic and international markets.
For the aboriginal and forestry sector based communities in B.C., sustainable forest resources are particularly critical to local livelihoods and the long-term economic and social stability of many small towns and villages.
B.C’s forest industry is recovering from a number of major challenges over the last decade. Recovering from these difficult circumstances has seen B.C’s forest sector work hard to survive, transform and adapt.

  • TLA members and the forestry sector have focused on innovation are leading improvements that will strengthen the competitiveness of B.C.’s forest sector in all areas.

  • We faced market challenges head on, and new market opportunities were targeted and expanded.

  • We have focused on Non-traditional products and services. Of particular note are those products and services derived from forest biomass. Increased production of bioproducts will give the industry a significant boost in the highly competitive global marketplace.

  • The importance of environmental sustainability has been recognized across the forest sector by TLA members, government, industry and other players. Sustainable forest management practices at every stage of production demonstrate responsible resource stewardship and respond to the expectations of today’s global marketplace.

  • We understand and support the importance of the supply- chain and are working with all players in the industry to ensure the supply chain remains strong.
